Using a tow dolly

Using a tow dolly

I have a 1973 Ford Bronco with an Automatic transmission.

What is the best way to use a tow dolly with this set up?

I was going to put the front wheels on the Dolly & then disengage the transfer case.

Will this eliminate the rear drive shaft from spinning?

I am towing it from South Carolina to California & I do not want to hurt the bronco. I will be using a Penske moving truck to tow the dolly & bronco. Hopefully the bronco will fit on the tow dolly. I can't get specifics about the tow dolly from penske. They did not understand that it was an EB(smaller) than a FS bronco. The guy put me down in his computer for a 73 Capri?

I am hoping the dolly will work for the bronco, but w/o specifics of the tow dolly I guess I am rolling the dice...I hope the wheel base is comparable.

ALSO..this bronco is clean and only driven once a month or so. What is suggested if any as far as doing any prep to the rear of the bronco for a 2500 mile trip?..I do not want problems with something burning up or freezing up on me during the cross country trek.

Any input would be helpfull.

I pulled my 71 EB from

I pulled my 71 EB from Chicago to Scranton, PA using a u-haul dolly. Front wheels on the dolly, unbolted the u-joint from the rear pinion yoke and strapped the drive shaft to the frame. I guess completely removing the shaft would have been safer but I made it okay. I also have 31 inch tires and the wheel straps were barely big enough. If your tires don't fit, flatten them till they do. about six inches of spare strap to be on the safe side.

Did you price the difference

Did you price the difference of getting the full trailer? Normally it is not too much. It is a smarter idea in my opinion. Easier to drive/back-up and much easier on your truck. Just my .02. Good luck
