Dana 20 transfer case engagement

Dana 20 transfer case engagement

Looking for advise on the procedure for engaging and disengaging the transfer case on my newly acquired 74 Bronco. It has a 302 with a C4 auto trans. It has no shift patter on the transfer case knob. Is the transfer case shift pattern 4L-N-2H-4H. Should my transmission be in park or neutral when I try to engage/disengage the transfer case? The transfer case shift lever has all sort of play/slop in it from front to rear and side to side. Should this be like that? Is there any way to adjust the linkage? Thanks,

74 has j type t-case

74 has j type t-case shifter.as in letter j .all the way to the right and all the way up is 2w high.straight back and down is 4 high.all the way left and straight up twards dash is 4 low.hubs should be engauged when going into 4-wheel.2 wheel high to 4 wheel high can be done while moveing.stop for 4 wheel low.to come out of 4 wheel low is best ,to stop,go into reverse .with a little gas go bak then let off of gas ,at same time pull t-case lever straight back to 4 hi. .then start forward let off gass shift into 2 hi.
remove boot at bottom of shifter .check bolt that holds shifter in place.tighten in nessary.
