3 -Speed Column Shift Adjustment (1966-1977)

Have you heard this before...

"I have a three speed column shift that will not shift into 2nd or 3rd.
The shift arms appear to move on the column while going through the gears,
but it does not go into 2nd or 3rd. Is this a column problem or a tranny
problem. Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot it ?"

General Column Shifter Information

Cluster FAQ (1966-1977)

General

The instrument panel is composed of 6 gauges: the speedometer, odometer, ammeter, coolant temp, oil pressure, and fuel level. The Instrument Voltage Regulator (IVR) supplies power to the coolant temp, oil pressure, and fuel level gauges only.

Speedometer Calibration

So you changed tires and now your speedometer is off?

  1. Find out how far off your speedo is (with the new tires installed)
    1. Using Milemarkers
      1. Drive on the highway for 10 miles (according to mile markers) and note how far your odometer advances. Divide the odo reading by 10 and that will tell you what percentage your speedo is off.

Ignition Switch - Removal and Installation (1966-1977)

To replace the ignition switch first remove the key cylinder:

1. Insert key and turn to the "ACC" position.
2. Insert a paperclip or stiff wire into the hole on the bottom right of key cylinder.
3. Turn the key cylinder past "ACC" counter-clockwise (about 1/8 - 1/4 turn).
4. Pull key and key cylinder out of ignition switch housing.

Remove the ignition switch from the dashboard.

1. Hold the front bezel in, and from the back (under the dash), push the ignition switch in, and turn 1/8 turn counter-clockwise, and remove the switch.
