Nuggets of Wisdom from Doug

Stupid Doug Tricks

Here is

list of 20 Stupid Doug Tricks. Everyone is going to think I'm the 4th Stooge, but I think if we all think back, we'll probably find some real doozies in our past. After about 20 years of wheeling, you can get quite a repertoire...

  1. 28 spline axles with a locker. 500 bucks in axles later, I figure out 31 splines are a good idea and that everyone's advice was correct.
  2. A 3 inch x 7 inch PS cooler on the F150 box conversion. Smoked about 4 gearboxes and 5 pumps before I found the value of a mondo cooler in front of the radiator.

Why an ORDFAQ?

At the time that I purchased my LandCruiser, My off-road experience had been limited to dirtbikes. I knew that there were significant differences between off-roading on a dirtbike, and off-roading on four wheels, but I couldn't find a source for hints on how to get up that gravel wash without spinning back down again, or how to cross a slope of tuff without holing a tire. This FAQ is an attempt to rectify that situation.

SEFI Self Diagnostic Test

SEFI Self Diagnostic Test

How to Prepare for the Self-Test,

To check for codes without buying a code reader is simple. If your EEC is wired correctly, the engine light works, and there are not any electrical faults in the vehicle you can get the codes out of your EEC.
Turn key to OFF.
Get a length of wire that can connect the STI to the negative battery terminal or body ground.
Ground the Self-Test Input.
Get some paper and a pen.
Get comfortable in the drivers seat.
Try to keep your self from getting distracted from here on.
Turn key to RUN.
You will hear some relays engage and the fuel pumps prime the system. This is the EEC beginning the test.

Types of Differentials

There are numerous types of axles.. A stock Bronco comes with either an open differential or a 2 or 4 pinion trac lok. The gear ratios available were 3.50, 4.11 and 4.56 (only with 6 cylinders). Of the above carriers (type of differential) the 4 pinion trac lok is the most desirable for a stock Bronco. However, many people have cracked the actual carrier housing of the trac loks, making them undesirable for HD off road use. However, if you are a street driver and don't do much extreme four wheeling and are not running a tire over 33 inches, they'll do fine.

Transmissions

    • Ford C6
    • Ford AOD
    • Chevy 700R4
  • Manual Transmissions
    • NP435
    • T18
    • T19
    • NV4500
    • Stock 3-speed

There are a few different kinds of trannies that can be put into an EB. You have the choice of automatic or manual. Then you have the choice of overdrive or not. Then, if going manual you also must decide if you want a granny low or a granny low with overdrive.
